Are Driver’s Licenses, IDs, Passports, and Social Security Cards Oaths or Curses?

I recently had a conversation with someone who has given up their driver’s license and social security number. I was shocked to hear this practice because it can eventually prove to be difficult to function in this world without them. The bizarre reason was because people in certain Torah observant communities have been teaching that driver’s licenses, identification cards, passports, and Social Security Cards are oaths, which they claim are essentially curses. Since they don’t want to have anything to do with curses, they throw out their licenses/identification cards and passports, as well as cease to use their social security number/card.

There are several things behind this:

  • Improper use of a concordance and/or lexicon
  • Deception
  • Manipulation, which is witchcraft
  • Religious spirit

Concordance and/or Lexicon

A Greek or Hebrew term may have more than one meaning, and it can be translated in a certain manner based on the context of the text.

People occasionally consult a concordance to see what Greek or Hebrew word is behind the English text. The purpose of a concordance is to tell us how a Greek or Hebrew word has been translated and the number of occurrences that word is found in Scripture. People often use it as a lexicon, which is a dictionary for other languages. A lexicon gives us definitions of the Greek or Hebrew word that is in question. There are a variety of lexicons; some are more detailed than others.

We must be extremely careful how we use and interpret what we find in concordances and lexicons. Sometimes, a different meaning for a Greek or Hebrew word makes much more sense when reading a passage of Scripture. It can make apparent discrepancies with other passages make much more sense if we use one of the different meanings but only if the meaning still fits the original context. This practice can better enhance our understanding of the overall text or topic in the Scriptures.

If and when we consider other possible translations, we must also follow the rules of grammar for the language we are working with!! Not doing so can result in a misinterpretation and eventual misapplication of the text!! I’ve had someone tell me they don’t care anything about grammar rules, which I found absolutely appalling! They refuse to understand the dangers of the path they are on!

Unfortunately, I don’t know the exact verse or Hebrew word this person was basing their beliefs on. Therefore, we will look at three Hebrew words that may have caused this erroneous teaching. We will look at the New Exhaustive Strong’s Concordance and Dictionary[i] first followed by a portion from The Complete Word Study Dictionary of the Old Testament[ii] for the same Strong’s number.

H7621 shevuah (noun):

  • Strong’s Concordance and Dictionary: feminine passive participle from H7650 – something sworn, that is an oath: – curse, oath, X sworn (30 occurrences)
  • Word Study: A noun meaning oath. An oath is a sacred promise attaching to what one has done or will do. An oath could also be sworn by a person to declare innocence; to proclaim friendship; to affirm a promise; to ratified peace treaties; to pledge loyalty to God; or to another person. an oath was considered to be an unbreakable contract; However, in two instances, the Bible presents well-defined possibilities in which an oath could be nullified and the obligated party could be acquitted.
  • Numbers 30:2 If a man vows a vow to the Lord, or swears an oath (shevuah) to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.

H7045 qelalah (noun):

  • Strong’s Concordance and Dictionary: from H7043 (verb qalal meaning to curse); vilification: – (ac-) curse (-d, -ing). (33 occurrences)
  • Word Study: This noun describes the general speaking of ill-will against another, as well as the official pronouncement on a person or nation.
  • Deuteronomy 11:26-28 See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse (qelalah): 27 the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, 28 and the curse (qelalah), if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way that I am commanding you today, to go after other gods that you have not known.

H423 alah (noun):

  • Strong’s Concordance and Dictionary: from H422 – an imprecation: – curse, cursing, execration, oath, swearing (35 occurrences)
  • Word Study: A noun meaning an oath, a sworn covenant, or a curse. The word signifies an oath to testify truthfully; a sworn covenant bearing a curse if violated; a curse from God for covenant violations; God’s judgment on sin; and that which is accursed because of unfaithfulness, such as an adulterous wife or the erring tribe of Judah.
  • Deuteronomy 29:20 The Lord will not be willing to forgive him, but rather the anger of the Lord and his jealousy will smoke against that man, and the curses (alōt; pl.) written in this book will settle upon him, and the Lord will blot out his name from under heaven.

An Oath or Curse is not a Physical Object

As you can see, an oath or curse is something spoken, and a curse can be the results of what is spoken over someone. There is absolutely nothing in these lexical definitions that can twist or extrapolate the meaning of an oath or a curse into something such as a physical card or passport used to identify oneself, give license to drive, enter/exit a country, or to collect money for future disbursement of benefits.

There is nothing to indicate these objects themselves are cursed either, although it is possible for demons to become attached to them by way of witchcraft. That is easily remedied by a command to be detached in the name of Yeshua.

Systems of the Earth

Dominion over the earth was returned to YHVH’s people as a result of the death and resurrection of Messiah. Man has set up systems – or mountains of influence – to accomplish certain management tasks in the earth. These systems can be used by Satan’s kingdom for evil or by Elohim’s (God’s) kingdom for good. We must protect these systems to make sure they are used properly.

The use of driver’s licenses, identification cards, passports, and/or social security cards are used for different purposes by these systems. Their use is not inherently evil. These things were created with good purposes and intentions. They are not the mark of the beast since they are not required for buying and selling.

Signs of Curses

If a person was under a curse of Elohim, you would see the following kinds of things – curses of the law – operating in a person’s life (See Deuteronomy 27-28 and Leviticus 26):

  • Financial struggles (cursed wherever you go)
  • Poverty; frequently in debt, which prevents you from being able to lend to others
  • Inability to produce; reaping little despite hard labor.
  • Never being able to eat or enjoy the fruit of your labor for any reason
  • Frequent or constant sickness or plagues
  • Pain and suffering
  • People leave you after you’ve Invested in them
  • Spouse will commit adultery and/or loss of children
  • Attack or theft of possessions
  • Mental illness, frequent failure, confusion, frustration; constant unsuccessfulness.
  • Blessings or promises always being withheld
  • Defeated by your enemies
  • Striving for peace without attaining it
  • Lack of favor
  • Demotion while others are promoted in the world (being the tail instead of the head)

These curses are the result of disobedience – a person habitually breaking the terms of YHVH’s marriage covenant – our relationship with Him. In other words, when we sin, we give license to Satan to operate in our lives, which opens the door to such curses.

These curses can be broken by renouncing/repenting of sin and taking back the license given to Satan. Walking in obedience, faith, hope, and love should result in blessing. One must make sure fear, guilt, anger, bitterness, and pride are not an issue.

Having, holding, or using a government issued card or booklet is not an act of disobedience to the Lord; therefore, it cannot result in a curse.

We are to submit to the governing authorities over us unless they are causing us to sin against Elohim. Having such a card does not hinder our ability to love the Lord and others, nor does it affect our ability to have faith, hope, and love.

Deception and the Religious Spirit

When we open ourselves up for deception, we are walking in dangerous territory. We are to guard our hearts and minds.  Deception often comes to us as a half-truth, then a twisting and manipulation – a form of witchcraft. We can experience confusion at first as we try to process and accept the lie. Once we have fallen for it, it is difficult to return to the truth. Other signs of deception besides confusion include fear, guilt, and condemnation. If you are experiencing these things as a result of using these forms of identity we are discussing, you are facing sure signs of deception.

Our hearts desire is to obey the Lord, but sometimes if we are not careful, we can be overtaken by a religious spirit that can blow things all out of proportion from what YHVH intends for us. We find ourselves obsessed over unwritten things instead of the over-all written goals of loving Elohim and people.

Witchcraft Curses

It is possible for witchcraft curses to come upon people if there is a cause.

  • Proverbs 26:2 Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying, a curse that is causeless does not alight.

Unfortunately, it does not take much to create a cause. Even something simple like frustration or anger can create a cause. Since this is the case, we must be diligent to master self-control over our reactions to stress, our emotions, and the thoughts that go through our minds. The battleground is our mind, and Satan will use all kinds of circumstances to attack us to cause us to sin.

Conclusion

It is my prayer that those who have experienced deception, witchcraft, or a religious spirit as a result of any teaching they may have encountered from any source of media or congregational teaching will know the truth and be set free in the name of Yeshua.
